Aldo Bakker’s Bloc armchair does more than simply occupy space, it makes a statement.
Compact and monolithic, its silhouette appears to have been carved from a dense mineral mass.
Its backrest rises in a broad, sharply defined curve, while its hollowed seat is absorbed into the thickness of the volume. Composed of curves and lines assembled according to an impenetrable grammar, the whole acquires the silent inevitability of a form that seems to have found its own necessity.
Whether monochrome or mottled, its wool cover softens transitions, absorbs light and gives the volume a muted depth. By contrast, the seams introduce a discreet yet essential tension. They draw and articulate the geometry of the armchair, divide its surfaces and emphasize the tensions within its construction. Without interrupting the form, they reveal its internal logic.
Depending on the viewing angle, Bloc seems to change character. From the front, it appears dense and contained; in profile, its line becomes taut and rises upward, giving the volume a more abstract quality.
Bloc succeeds in freeing itself from its function to acquire a plastic existence of its own, liberated from any preconceived notion. Curves, surfaces, material and seam lines come together to form a homogenous and autonomous whole.
