Designed in 1969 by Sergio Asti for the Milanese manufacturer Bilumen, the Trifoglio floor lamp develops a composition based on the repetition of the number three. Three vertical uprights come together to form a fluted stem, extended at floor level by a clover-shaped base and crowned by three hemispherical diffusers. The lamp thus combines the rigour of an architectural column with the more organic image of a flower in bloom.
The structure is made of metal tubing and sheet metal, cut, formed and assembled before receiving a glossy black lacquered finish. The diffuser is made of opaline white methacrylate, industrially moulded to create a regular, translucent shell.

Designer :

Sergio Asti

Sergio Asti is an important figure in Italian design of the second half of the twentieth century, renowned for a body of work in which architecture, objects, and industry engage in a constant search for balance between innovation and formal elegance. Trained in architecture under Gio Ponti, he developed from the 1950s onward an approach attentive to materials, uses, and the quality of forms, contributing to the renewal of modern Italian design. His collaboration with Bilumen gave rise to several iconic lighting pieces, among them the Trifoglio floor lamp, designed in the 1970s. Characterized by a sculptural silhouette and a construction based on the repetition of diffusing elements, Trifoglio reflects his interest in light that is both functional and expressive. Produced within the experimental context of Italian design during this period, this rare piece testifies to Sergio Asti’s ability to transform a technical object into an architectural and poetic presence. His work is now held in the collections of the leading institutions devoted to twentieth-century design.
