Neo-Renaissance wall console

This Neo-Renaissance wall console in carved walnut, Florentine and dating from the second half of the 19th century, circa 1870–1880, is distinguished by the exceptional richness of its ornament. Its naturalistic vocabulary, deeply modelled carving and the presence of birds integrated into the decoration closely relate it to the work of Luigi Frullini and his circle, although no definitive attribution can be made in the absence of a signature.
A strongly moulded upper shelf rests on a sculptural composition that narrows towards the bottom. Scrolls, acanthus leaves, flowers, palmettes and ribbons intertwine around three birds carved almost in the round. The contrast between deeply recessed areas, projecting reliefs and finely punched backgrounds intensifies the play of light and shadow and gives the wood remarkable depth.
Made primarily from solid walnut, the console combines cabinetmaking, moulding and carving with chisels and gouges, including undercutting, hollowed sections and elements probably carved separately before being assembled. Its warm brown patina further enhances the refinement of the workmanship.
It belongs to the revival of Florentine woodcarving in the 19th century, which reinterpreted Renaissance forms with a pronounced interest in the observation of nature. Through the density, virtuosity and preservation of its decoration, this console constitutes a rare piece, closer to the work of a sculptor-ornamentist than to ordinary decorative furniture.
