Designed around 2000 by Maarten Van Severen for Kartell, the LCP – Low Chair Plastic pushes the designer’s exploration of reducing a chair to a continuous form to its extreme. A single strip of transparent, mass-coloured PMMA successively defines the backrest, seat and base in a fluid, almost calligraphic movement. Seen in profile, the structure appears to be nothing more than a single line folded back on itself.
This visual simplicity relies on a demanding manufacturing process: a thick sheet of PMMA is heated, bent and thermoformed into highly pronounced curves, while reinforcing plates, spacers and metal fittings stabilize the area beneath the seat. The material retains a slight flexibility that contributes to the comfort of the chair.
In this fluorescent pink-red version, transparency heightens the sculptural effect: light gathers along the polished edges and casts colour into the space around the chair.
The model is represented in several major public collections, including the MoMA, the Centre Pompidou, the Museum of Fine Arts, Houston, the Montreal Museum of Fine Arts and the Design Museum Brussels, confirming its importance in the recent history of plastic furniture.

Maarten Van Severen is one of the leading figures of contemporary Belgian design. Trained in the arts and architecture, he developed from the 1980s onward a radical approach to furniture based on the search for essentials, formal reduction, and the exploration of the intrinsic qualities of materials. His work is characterized by great constructive rigor, close attention to ergonomics, and a desire to create durable objects stripped of any superfluous element. His N°2 chair, designed in the early 1990s, and his U Line lighting range created for Light are among the most representative creations of this period of research. Produced in limited editions and now rare, these pieces bear witness to an essential experimental phase in his career, before his international collaborations with major design publishers. Through their extreme sobriety, constructive precision, and timeless quality, they illustrate the singular vision of a designer who profoundly renewed the language of contemporary furniture. His works are now included in the collections of the leading international institutions dedicated to design.
