Designed in 1992 by Maarten Van Severen and manufactured in his Ghent workshop, Van Severen Meubelen, Chair No. 2, or CN° II, reduces seating to a structure of remarkable formal economy. A thin sheet of aluminium is folded to form the seat and backrest in a continuous surface, while a frame made from the same metal extends its geometric rigour. The slight curvature of the sheet supports the body while giving the chair an almost graphic silhouette.
The aluminium elements are cut, folded, assembled and sanded by hand, preserving subtle traces of the making process. Left entirely uncovered, the metal reveals its natural tonal variations and gradually acquires a patina through use.
Its value lies in this handcrafted production in small series, preceding the industrial editions that would later bring the designer international recognition. Examples made by Van Severen Meubelen display slight variations in finish and represent rare milestones in the development of the later .03 chair. Aluminium versions of the CN° II are held in the collections of the Museum of Modern Art in New York and the Vitra Design Museum.

Maarten Van Severen is one of the leading figures of contemporary Belgian design. Trained in the arts and architecture, he developed from the 1980s onward a radical approach to furniture based on the search for essentials, formal reduction, and the exploration of the intrinsic qualities of materials. His work is characterized by great constructive rigor, close attention to ergonomics, and a desire to create durable objects stripped of any superfluous element. His N°2 chair, designed in the early 1990s, and his U Line lighting range created for Light are among the most representative creations of this period of research. Produced in limited editions and now rare, these pieces bear witness to an essential experimental phase in his career, before his international collaborations with major design publishers. Through their extreme sobriety, constructive precision, and timeless quality, they illustrate the singular vision of a designer who profoundly renewed the language of contemporary furniture. His works are now included in the collections of the leading international institutions dedicated to design.
