Designed in 2005 by American architect Greg Lynn for Vitra, the Ravioli ensemble translates the designer’s research into digital modelling and continuous forms into furniture. The armchair brings the backrest, armrests, seat and base together within a single undulating volume, while the ottoman extends its formal language and can be combined with it to create a modular domestic landscape.
The structure consists of a polyester shell reinforced with fibreglass, covered with polyurethane foam and a three-dimensional textile mesh mechanically knitted to follow the complex curves without visible seams. Its production combines computer-aided design, composite moulding and techniques derived from upholstered furniture.
Presented as part of the 2007 Vitra Edition and now out of production, Ravioli has become rare, particularly when preserved with its ottoman and original upholstery. Its value lies in its experimental character and pioneering place in the history of digital design. The armchair is notably held in the collections of the Museum of Modern Art in New York and the Art Institute of Chicago.

Greg Lynn is a major figure in contemporary architecture, renowned for his experimental approach based on the relationships between form, digital technologies, and new modes of design. An architect, theorist, and educator, he developed from the 1990s onward an architectural vision that explores the potential of computer modeling, complex geometries, and innovative fabrication processes. At the intersection of architecture and design, his work questions the ways in which objects and spaces can evolve through generative systems. The Ravioli seating collection, designed for Vitra in 1998, illustrates this research through its radical approach to furniture, transforming an industrial production technology into an organic, flexible, and enveloping form. Made of injected foam covered with stretch fabric, this series reflects his interest in the fusion of structure, material, and use. His work, preserved and exhibited in numerous international institutions, has helped redefine the boundaries between architecture, design, and technology.
