Designed around 1925 by René Herbst for the Cusenier company, this earthenware ensemble comprises an ovoid pouring vessel and a broad presentation dish. The compact form of the vessel, its flat handle and the geometric organisation of the decoration anticipate the modernist vocabulary that Herbst would soon develop within the Union des Artistes Modernes. Green and reddish-brown enamels, applied in symmetrical areas of colour, stylise vines and grapes while evoking the wines and spirits produced by the commissioning company.
Both elements were formed in earthenware, fired and coated with a glossy polychrome glaze. Slight variations in the enamel reveal the ceramic production process, while the Cusenier marks and RH monogram confirm the attribution. Presented on the Cusenier stand at the 1925 International Exhibition of Modern Decorative and Industrial Arts in Paris, the ensemble is now rare, as complete examples have often been dispersed or damaged.

René Herbst is one of the pioneers of modern design in France and a key figure in the rationalist movement of the interwar period. As an architect and designer, he took part from the 1920s onward in the renewal of domestic forms, advocating an aesthetic based on functionality, technical innovation, and the use of industrial materials. A founding member of the Union des Artistes Modernes alongside creators such as Robert Mallet-Stevens, he worked to promote furniture adapted to contemporary lifestyles. His creations, notably his tubular metal seating and furniture with clean lines, reflect a constant pursuit of ergonomics, structural rationality, and modernity. His work has profoundly shaped the history of French design and is now included in the collections of the leading institutions devoted to modern art and design.
