Designed in the early 1970s by Motoko Ishii for Staff Leuchten, the polyhedral ceiling light, model 6647, transforms illumination into a sculptural composition with a distinctly futuristic character. Its faceted moulded-glass diffusers, arranged around octagonal bases in chromed metal, evoke projecting crystals. The reflective finish of the structure multiplies the play of light. Designed for installation on either a ceiling or a wall.

Complete examples are now rare, as the glass elements are particularly vulnerable to chips and impact damage. Large modular compositions preserved intact are therefore especially sought after.

Awarded an iF Design Award in 1974, the 6647 occupies a recognised place in the history of 1970s lighting design.

Designer :

Ishii Motoko

Ishii Motoko is a pioneering figure in Japanese lighting design and one of the first designers to elevate lighting to the status of an autonomous artistic and architectural discipline. After training in Japan and studying in Europe, she developed from the 1960s onward an approach based on mastering light as a spatial element, capable of revealing volumes, altering perceptions, and creating new sensory experiences. Her research led to luminaires and installations in which technology, formal rigor, and luminous poetry come together. Her collaborations with international manufacturers, notably Yamagiwa in Japan and Staff Leuchten in Europe, helped spread a new conception of domestic and architectural lighting. Alongside her monumental and urban projects realized around the world, her produced works reflect a constant exploration of the balance between function, emotion, and space. Now recognized as a major reference in contemporary lighting design, Motoko Ishii has profoundly influenced several generations of designers.
