Designed in the early 1960s by Vittorio Introini for Saporiti Italia, this chest
of drawers belongs to the Pellicano series, characterised by its enveloping
volumes and broadly rounded corners. Three horizontal drawers are set
within a continuous carcass, raised on a recessed base that visually
lightens the composition. The chrome-plated metal handles, composed of
vertical plates and rings, punctuate the façade like graphic signs.
The structure combines solid wood, veneered panels and curved or
assembled elements to form the rounded sides and substantial mouldings
of the top and base. The red lacquered finish allows the grain of the wood
to remain visible. Applied in successive layers, it gives the piece a
luminous depth that contrasts with the cool brilliance of the metal fittings.
Its value lies in the quality of its cabinetmaking and in the rarity of this low,
drawer-fronted configuration, which was produced in far smaller numbers
than the large sideboards in the series. The red colour further enhances
its singularity, as the models are more commonly found in natural wood or
neutral tones.
