Designed in 1972 by Gae Aulenti and Livio Castiglioni for Stilnovo, the
Sistema Trepiù floor lamp, model 6102, belongs to a family of lights based
on the repetition and adjustability of hemispherical reflectors. A slender
rectangular column rises from a black hemispherical base and supports a
compact cluster of four chrome-plated spotlights. Each can be rotated
independently, allowing the light to be directed in several directions and
continually altering the silhouette of the object.

The contrast between the aluminium upright, the substantial cast-iron
base and the mirror-like brilliance of the reflectors gives the lamp a
presence that is both technical and sculptural. The black joints and visible
cables form an integral part of the design, transforming the floor lamp into
a mobile architecture of light.

This four-reflector configuration is particularly rare, significantly
less common than the other versions of the Sistema Trepiù, and
represents one of the most spectacular expressions of the collaboration
between Gae Aulenti, Livio Castiglioni and Stilnovo.

Designer :

Gae Aulenti & Livio Castiglioni

Gae Aulenti and Livio Castiglioni are among the leading figures of Italian design in the second half of the twentieth century. As architects and designers, each developed a distinctive approach to design, based on the search for a balance between functionality, technical innovation, and aesthetic quality. Their collaborations reflect a fruitful dialogue between Livio Castiglioni’s conceptual rigor and Gae Aulenti’s spatial sensitivity, giving rise to objects in which form, use, and light are closely intertwined. Their Trepiù lighting range, designed for Stilnovo in the 1970s, illustrates this approach through its geometric construction, great versatility, and timeless elegance. A rare example of a jointly signed creation, this collection reflects the creative effervescence of Italian design during this period and their shared ability to transform a functional object into a true architectural expression. Highly sought after by collectors today, their luminaires occupy an important place in the history of modern Italian design.
