Designed in 1981 by Cini Boeri for Artemide, the Brontes lamp combines a
cylindrical base to the organic form of an inclined diffuser. The compact
column in red-lacquered metal supports a ribbed glass screen whose
profile recalls a shell or a car headlight. Mounted on a joint, the head can
be tilted to adjust the direction of the light and alter the object’s
silhouette.
The diffuser is made by pressing glass into a mould, which creates a
succession of concentric reliefs across its surface. Its partially reflective
inner face directs the luminous flux, while the translucent areas soften its
intensity. A thick black rubber rim protects the edge of the glass and
graphically emphasises its outline. The lacquered metal base houses the
light source and tilting mechanism, combining industrial processes,
mechanical precision and formal experimentation.
Out of production, Brontes remains uncommon on the market. Its rarity
appears to result from a really limited initial distribution and from the
singularity of its construction, based on components specifically
developed for this model.

Cini Boeri is a major figure in Italian design of the second half of the twentieth century, recognized for an approach based on the search for a balance between functionality, technical innovation, and the sensory quality of space. Trained as an architect, she developed a body of work in which furniture, interior design, and industrial design are part of a broader reflection on use and on the relationship between object and user. Her work on lighting reflects the same high standards, exploring light as an architectural element capable of transforming the perception of space. Her Brontes lamp, created for Artemide in the 1970s, illustrates this approach through its sculptural form, timeless character, and innovative treatment of light diffusion. Produced in a context of formal and technical experimentation characteristic of Italian design during this period, it is now a sought-after piece among collectors. Through her creations, Cini Boeri contributed to renewing the language of contemporary design by combining architectural rigor, poetic form, and attention to the human experience.
