Materials : Cut, pressed, folded and assembled aluminium; polychrome lacquered and enamelled finish, with a turquoise-to-ultramarine blue gradient over a pale ground. The Centre Pompidou records the technique as “enamelled aluminium.”

Designed in 1996 by Ronan and Erwan Bouroullec and produced by Cappellini, the Hole chair is defined by a deliberately elemental geometry. Its seat, backrest and frame form a continuous silhouette, while a single rectangular opening in the backrest lightens the structure. This void, which gives the model its name, is the chair’s principal architectural feature.
The chair is made from aluminium that is cut, pressed, folded and assembled. The pressing process gives the metal its rigidity and subtle modelling while preserving a visually slender profile. The surface is enamelled. On this example, a gradation from turquoise to ultramarine blue crosses the backrest and continues onto the seat, creating the effect of a coloured shadow or luminous reflection.
Its value lies in the precision of the metalwork and in the delicacy of the polychrome finish. Now out of production, the model has become rare. An example is held in the collection of the Musée National d’Art Moderne–Centre Pompidou.
